Is Homosexuality a Sin?

Updated: Sep 24

Rainbow flag with text "Is Homosexuality a sin?"

Homosexuality has been a massive wave at the forefront of today's culture, with the celebration of pride month, pride merch and products sold at almost every store, allies and activists fighting for the LGBTQ+ cause, and the rise of churches openly accepting and celebrating homosexuality in their congregations. How should we respond as believers of Jesus Christ? How do we know the truth about these issues? The first step as believers is to put down our own personal opinions and feelings and to look to the scriptures. The Word of God is the only true standard that shows us how to interact and understand cultural and spiritual issues from God's perspective. "All scriptures is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness." (2 Timothy 3:16) So what does the Bible actually say about homosexuality? Let's find out!

The Old Testament

"You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination." (Leviticus 18:22)

"If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall surely be put to death; their blood is upon them." (Leviticus 12:13)

"Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh." (Genesis 2:24)

The Story of Sodom and Gomorrah (Genesis 19:1-13)

The New Testament

"For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error." (Romans 1:26-27)

"Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God." (1 Corinthians 9-10)

"just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities, which likewise indulged in sexual immorality and pursued unnatural desire, serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire." (Jude 1:7)

But from the beginning of creation, God made them male and female.“ For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother, and the two shall become one flesh; so they are no longer two, but one flesh. “What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate.(Mark 10:6)

"But we know that the Law is good, if one uses it lawfully, realizing the fact that law is not made for a righteous person, but for those who are lawless and rebellious, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers and immoral men and homosexuals and kidnappers and liars and perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound teaching, according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, with which I have been entrusted." (1 Timothy 1:8-11)

"But because of the temptation to sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband." (1 Corinthians 7:2)

After reading these scriptures, ask yourself, am I willing to submit to God's truth? Or will I submit instead to the culture's pressures and/or my own feelings and opinions? We can't be the light of the world (Matthew 5:15) if we are believing a lie and teaching others to do the same. Only truth will set us free, not tolerance in the name of "love".

The good news is that whatever sin we are struggling with whether it is homosexuality or something else, we can lay it at the feet of Jesus. If we deny ourselves and follow Him, He will give us a new nature. "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come." (2 Corinthians 5:17) It may be a process, but He promises that if we submit ourselves to Him, He will complete the good work He has started in us. (Philippians 1:6)
